#1: Organization. Organization. Organization.
So crucial we’re going to say it thrice. Starting from making lists of exactly what you need to buy at the grocery store to organizing all your cabinets according to your cooking or prep style, we believe organization is key to an effective kitchen. Making grocery lists is of utmost importance because this is the first step to planning your weekly meals. This also helps in not going overboard and/or buying junk food. And please, don’t ever go to the supermarket hungry.
If you know where everything is in your kitchen cupboards, you won’t waste any time looking for ingredients. This is especially useful when you’re trying not to burn your house down. Knowing where things are also helps you know when you need refills.
Once you know what you’re going to be making, measure out and prep your ingredients in advance so you optimize your time more effectively. Peel, cut, chop, tri, roast, grind, marinate, soak and sauté your stuff and store them so you can reduce your many trips to the refrigerator to just the one or two.
#3 Kitchen Flow
Arrange your cookware in a way that is ergonomic and time-saving. Keep the spoons and spatulas around where you do a lot of the mixing, stirring and cooking, and the knives where you do the cutting and chopping, and so on. Trust us, it’s so much better this way.
#4 Breakfast at Night
Prep for breakfast the night before so you can get in some extra zzz’s in the morning or just have some extra time to set yourself up for the day. Soak some oats, nuts and seeds in jars overnight and voila! You have a super-nutritious breakfast ready to go in the morning. Adding fresh fruit gets you extra points!
#5 Pack Snacks
Put aside some free time to cut up some fruit and veggies or make some healthy dips (hummus, salsa, guacamole) or nut butters to just grab and go from the fridge. These are life-savers when you’re crunched for time or just need a quick pick-me-up!
#6 One Pot Wonders
Using one pot for all steps involved makes for a huge win! Clean-up is half as time consuming and recipes that call for just one pot are usually simpler and require fewer steps. Win-win!
#7 Clean Sink = Clear Mind
Clean as you go! Soak your dishes as you get done with them. Keep a wet rag to clean spills when they happen. By the end of your cooking or your meal, you’ll have lesser to worry about. There’s nothing like the feeling of not having to do dishes after eating.
